Axis Deer Hunting takes place in the heart of the Texas Hill Country which is rather rocky terrain and very hilly. The property also has a good number of oak trees and cedar thickets that the Axis use for cover. Sunrises and sunsets are second to none here in the Hill Country. Our property tends to have very dry conditions and has rocky ground so it can be kind of tough terrain to walk in some places which just adds to the thrill of a spot and stalk Axis hunt. We recommend starting your Axis hunt from a comfortable stand which consist of box blinds and some elevated premanufactured hunting stands like the Redneck blinds. Most distances from a stand to feeder are about eighty to one hundred yards maximum. Most of our stands can accommodate up to three people but a maximum of two people will give you the most comfort and room to maneuver.
If you did not know the Axis Deer hunting season is all year around and based off the herd. When the males are born is what determines when they drop their antlers, so the hunting season is continuous. The only thing that changes throughout the year is the time that Axis hunters will go to stands or spot and stalk hunt based on sunset and sunrise. Most of our hunting guests arrive between noon and two PM. During the summer months you can arrive as late as three PM and still have enough time to go out hunting. This ensures you have enough time for a meet and greet, review your Axis hunt details, make sure your guns are sighted in, and then get to your stand for the first sitting. We try to make sure your Axis Deer Hunting Trip will start about three to four hours before dark in the afternoon and about an hour before daybreak in the mornings.
After each hunt, a guide will retrieve any harvested game, take a few pictures in the field with your harvest and return you to the lodge for a satisfying meal. After your morning hunt we serve a big breakfast or a brunch and then most hunters will either nap or just relax around the hunting lodge. Once we get closer to the afternoon hunt, we can decide if it will be better to stand hunt or spot and stalk with a guide at no extra charge. Hill Country Adventures will do all we can to help you harvest that trophy Axis deer. You also have the option after your morning meal to go right back out spot and stalk hunting. You have many options on your Axis Deer Hunting and if you do choose a spot and stalk hunt that will always include a guide. The afternoon hunt will last until dark if in a stand and then back to camp for a hardy dinner.
The main Axis hunting lodge is 2400 square feet with a big kitchen and has a big bar that our guests use to relax and recount the days’ events along with tables and chairs for eating. A nice big comfortable living room with satellite TV and Wi-Fi. There are internet connections in every building and AP’s outside for Wi-Fi calling if needed. The rest of the lodge is an open area that is big enough to play corn hole which we do on occasion. The sleeping arrangements are a large bunk room, and it has six beds. Three of the bunks are bottom Queen and twin tops. The bathroom has two showers, two toilets, and a double lavatory. We include everything except your toiletries but if you have a favorite pillow, please bring it along but it is not necessary.
Private Axis deer hunting lodging is also available in addition to the main lodge which is a 2-bedroom Jack and Jill with Queen beds where the only thing shared would be a shower and you have your own toilet and lavatory. This is primarily used for couples, parent, and youth hunts where we prefer to keep the women or youth hunters separated from any other hunters that are not a part of your hunting party.
Generally, when we are discussing your reservation, we discuss meals and options that we provide for you or your group. A typical breakfast is eggs, bacon, biscuits, and gravy along with some fruit. Other options include a light breakfast or maybe you are in the mood for something a little different like a breakfast pizza (castle Breakfast) which is very popular, egg bake, which is like lasagna but all breakfast items. If we are on the move and going out hunting immediately after breakfast, then we will prepare breakfast burritos or the like. Lunch is not prepared but it is provided for the few that may get hungry before we go back out to the stand in the afternoon. Sandwich items are always available, and snacks are plentiful. Dinners will vary from home cooked steak and fixings, fajita bar, a marinated pork steak, chicken dinner or a little Louisiana flare which include several Cajun dishes like a shrimp boil or if it is in season we can do crawfish and much more. If you would like we can cater in some of the dinners and your options are Thai food, Chinese food, or Italian if you would like. We do our best to keep you fueled up and ready to hunt.
The hunting gear that is most important to bring with you on your Axis hunting trip are good camouflage clothing, range finder, walking stick or monopod shooting stick, binoculars minimum 10 power, weapon of choice, minimum one box of ammunition for rifle hunters, and a good pair of lace up boots if possible. Rubber boots can work but lace ups work much better, especially if we decide to spot and stalk. If you are coming in the summer months, a good hat for shade and be sure your clothing is light and breathable because it can get extremely hot in the Hill Country of Texas. Check the weather before you come so you know what type of clothing to bring for your weather tolerance. The zip code to use for our local weather is 78631.
At Hill Country Adventures we offer both Fully Guided Axis Deer Hunts and Semi Guided Axis Deer Hunting. A Semi Guided Axis Deer Hunt here in Texas is where we take the hunter directly to their stand and help you get settled, give distance to feeder and maximum distances in your field of view then your guide will leave you to enjoy your hunt. We will be available for calls or text messages during your hunt and generally pick you up around 10 am unless other arrangements are made. For the afternoon hunt we will pick you up and retrieve any downed game when you text, call, or when there is no more shooting light.
While you are on an Axis Deer Hunt it is possible to hunt other Exotic Game here at Hill Country Adventures. Before we leave you at your stand you will be given pictures of other animals in season that can be harvested during your stay. We try to keep our Axis hunts as simple and easy-going as possible. If you are not educated in trophy scoring an Axis Deer, we will provide you with the knowledge and image of a Trophy Class Axis Buck. If for any reason a hunter is not comfortable being in a stand-alone, we also provide Fully Guided Axis Deer Hunting Packages. We generally offer fully guided Axis hunts at NO extra charge. The only time we charge for a fully guided Axis hunt is if you have a large group and additional hunting guides are necessary.
